Faculty and Alum Present Innovative Voice Training Workshops at PEVoC 2024

Dr. Chadley Ballantyne (Associate Professor of Music, Voice) and Alyson Culbertson (BMp, Voice ’23) participated in the 15th PanEuropean Voice Conference (PEVoC), held in Santander, Spain from September 4-7, 2024. The conference, themed “Voice Moves the World,” explored the science and artistry of the voice, covering areas such as voice disorders, care, and training. Over 400 participants from around the world engaged in a variety of scientific presentations, workshops, and hands-on activities, contributing to research and future advancements in voice communication.

Chadley and Alyson co-presented a workshop titled “Antagonism in Voice Training: Muscle Pairs, Range of Motion, and Contrasting Sounds.” The workshop focused on the relationships between antagonistic muscle groups in the voice and how exploring these contrasts can enhance vocal technique. Participants engaged in exercises to broaden their range of motion and improve movement patterns, with the goal of expanding their expressive capabilities.

In addition, Chadley presented a workshop titled “Pure Sound Vs. Rough Sensation: Sorting the Sensations of the Sung Tone.” This focused on improving vocal teaching methods through understanding sound and vibration perception. The workshop explored the interplay between touch and hearing in vocal training, linking vibrotactile awareness research to common singing sensations. Participants gained insight into the limitations and mechanisms of vibrotactile perception, helping them differentiate between felt and non-felt components of sound. The session aimed to enhance vocal function and improve instructional techniques in the voice studio.
