Dr. Lynn Brinckmeyer Presents Sessions for Music Educators

Dr. Lynn Brinckmeyer from Texas State University and former national president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)  will be at Stetson for a 2-day residency on August 24 & 25.  She will present sessions geared toward Music Educators and we welcome alumni and local music educators to join us for any and/or all of these sessions.

We will assist guests with acquiring professional development credit if they desire.

The following sessions are scheduled:

Thursday, August 24, 2023 – Presser Hall, Tinsley

9:30-10:45am – Reflect, Celebrate, Innovate –
When engaging in music and the other arts, students build diverse communities and cultures, including ways of thinking to prompt them to learn. How do we activate all learners for transformative and expansive music educational experiences? All learners are more successful at accessing information when actively engaged, rather than listening to a lecture. Be ready to participate!

11:40am-12:30pm – First Year Teachers: Diamond in the Rough –
Quite often music teachers end up in charge of ensembles or classes with little or no experience with a certain age group or instrumentation.  Here are some tips to help you take the skills you already have and apply them to vocal, instrumental, and general music.  Students who move, sing, and employ their eyes in conjunction with one another are more able to retain the content of the lesson regardless of age or educational background.  This session is intended to share numerous ideas utilizing movement, visual aids, and listening to enhance success with singing and reading notation.

Friday, August 25, 2023 – McMahan Hall, Feasel

2:30-5:30pm – MUED 350 (3 topics – approximately 1 hour for each)

How Do You Motivate Children and Adolescents? –
When children and adolescents are motivated, they are unstoppable. How do you channel their energy so that you can guide them on a musical journey? Explore tips and ideas from various master choral music educators who teach children and young adolescents. Attendees will explore a variety of strategies to ignite students’ curiosity to learn and sing musically. Be prepared to stay engaged throughout the clinic through singing, chanting, and moving/body percussion. All of the ideas are kid-tested, user-friendly and applicable in public school or private school choral settings.

Learn, Teach, Inspire –
Why did we choose this career path and why do we stay? Where are we? Where are we going? How are we going to get there? Sometimes it helps to remind ourselves of why we do what we do. Our music is our gift: to our students, to ourselves and to the world.

Kids & Drums: Endless Possibilities –
Searching for new ideas to keep your students engaged and excited about music? Come try “kid tested” strategies for keeping students engaged. Be ready to move, sing and drum because energetic participation is a pre-requisite!

Questions should be addressed to Dr. John Lychner at jlychner@stetson.edu.

We hope that many colleagues will join us for this exciting learning opportunity!
