Message from the Dean

Greetings from Presser Hall.

A dynamic chapter is underway at the Stetson University School of Music. Since beginning my tenure as Dean, we have moved with clarity and purpose to advance priorities that strengthen our standing as a cultural and academic institution of national distinction. Our focus on student-centered learning and community engagement continues to expand opportunities that elevate both the educational experience and our public profile.

Several initiatives now anchor this work. Each year, our students perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City through the Stetson in New York Chamber Music and Solo Program, offering soloists and chamber ensembles professional-level exposure in one of the world’s most respected venues. Our national and international touring programs further extend that reach, allowing students to serve as cultural ambassadors while gaining global perspective through performance and collaboration abroad.

We have also strengthened professional pathways through our partnership with Opera Orlando, where selected students participate in apprenticeships that provide hands-on experience in production, rehearsal, and performance alongside working artists. Within the School, the Neil and Dolly Huhta Instrumental Music Competition now celebrates excellence across disciplines, providing recognition and support to our students.

On campus, the new Hollis Family Music Atrium has become a vibrant center for collaboration, performance, and gathering. This welcoming space brings students, faculty, alumni, and guests together in ways that encourage creativity, connection, and shared pride in the work we do.

Our faculty—accomplished musicians, educators, and professionals—remain at the core of these efforts, guiding students with rigor and care while contributing to a thriving artistic community.

I invite you to follow our progress and consider subscribing to this site to stay connected with the achievements of our students, faculty, alumni, and staff as we continue to build a strong and forward-looking School of Music.

Sincerely,

Washington Garcia, DMA
